Menorrhagia: When Periods Become Too Heavy
Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding—clinically known as menorrhagia—is more than just an inconvenience. It can lead to fatigue, emotional stress, and even anemia. Many people go months or years without finding relief, thinking it’s “just part of life.”
In medical terms, menorrhagia refers to:
- Menstrual bleeding that lasts more than 7 days
- Excessive blood loss that interferes with daily life
- Needing to change sanitary products every 1–2 hours or passing large clots
Common Causes of Menorrhagia
There are many reasons why your body might be experiencing heavy periods, including:
- Hormonal imbalances (e.g. estrogen dominance or thyroid dysfunction)
- Uterine fibroids or polyps
- Endometriosis or adenomyosis
- Stress, lifestyle factors, or medications
- Bleeding disorders
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), menorrhagia often relates to:
- Qi deficiency, which weakens the body’s ability to hold blood
- Heat in the blood, causing reckless bleeding
- Blood stagnation, preventing proper flow
- Kidney or Spleen deficiencies, leading to poor reproductive support
How We Treat Menorrhagia at North Tucson Acupuncture
At North Tucson Acupuncture, we take a comprehensive and natural approach. Treatment starts by stopping the active bleeding and regulating the cycle through:
- Acupuncture
Regulates the nervous system, supports hormonal balance, and improves blood flow.
- Moxibustion
A gentle warming technique used to strengthen the Spleen and Kidney channels, helping the body hold and contain blood.
- Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM)
Delivers targeted, low-level electrical currents to reduce inflammation, support tissue healing, and calm the body on a cellular level.
Together, these therapies help quickly stabilize symptoms and restore balance.
Treating the Root, Not Just the Symptoms
After bleeding is under control, we focus on the underlying root cause—whether that’s hormonal dysregulation, chronic inflammation, or energetic deficiencies.
We may introduce Chinese herbal medicine, dietary guidance, and continued FSM therapy to support deeper healing and prevent recurrence.
Real Results: A Patient Success Story
One patient came to our clinic after months of continuous bleeding. Her doctor recommended a hysterectomy as the only remaining option. After just one acupuncture and FSM treatment, the bleeding began to slow—and stopped completely within two days.
While not every response is this rapid, it highlights the effectiveness of integrative medicine when tailored to the individual.

About This Blog Series
This blog series explores some of the more common—but often complex and challenging—conditions I treat in my clinic. Each post is personally written by me, Alastair Macleod, MAc.OM, drawing from real-world experience and the clinical outcomes I’ve seen firsthand.
Though these conditions can be difficult to manage with conventional approaches, my goal is to share insights and treatments that have consistently delivered good results for my patients. If you’re facing something similar, I hope this information helps you feel more informed, empowered, and hopeful on your healing journey.
